Fresh Green Bean Side Dish Recipe (2024)

Fresh Green Bean Side Dish Recipe is a fantastic side dish anytime of the year but especially when fresh green beans are in season.

The key to making this easy delicious Fresh Green Bean Side Dish Recipe is to caramelize the onion and pepper after the broth has evaporated. That’s what takes this recipe over the top.

I’m going to guess that the first time I made this green bean side dish was about 10 years ago. I had planted my first crop of fresh green beans in the garden and I needed a way to use them fresh, as well as freezing some for the winter.

After I tasted tasted this recipe, there weren’t a whole lot of fresh green beans that made it into the freezer for the Winter that year. My son and I wanted them made using this recipe for literally DAYS! I didn’t think we were ever going to get enough of them. Thankfully fresh green beans are available all year long in grocery stores so we don’t have to wait for a Summer or Fall crop of green beans to make them.

Can I make Fresh Green Bean Side Dish Recipe with frozen green beans that are thawed or canned green beans?

I know someone will ask this question so let’s get it out of the way. First, I’ve only ever made this recipe with fresh green beans. Yes ,you can use frozen thawed green beans but the texture of the thawed green bean before making the recipe will be different than using a fresh green bean.

Using canned green beans…I wouldn’t recommend using canned green beans. They’re texture is way too soft to hold together using the cooking method for fresh green beans in this recipe.

Now with that being said, if your curiosity gets the best of you and you want to try it… If you used canned green beans I would saute the minced garlic, chopped onion and green peppers first until soft and caramelized. Then add the canned green beans and a small amount of chicken broth to the pan just to warm the green beans in.

You may even want to drain the chicken broth before serving it. But like I said, I’ve only ever made this recipe with fresh green beans. Now that those questions are out of the way, let’s make this delicious Fresh Green Bean Side Dish Recipe!

We start the recipe by snapping the ends off of a pound of fresh green beans and rinsing them under cold water.

Place the butter into a large skillet under medium heat. After the butter has melted add the olive oil to the pan. Place the minced garlic, chopped red bell pepper and onions into the pan. Cook the mixture for about a minute while stirring with a spatula.

After the garlic, red peppers and onion are sautéed slightly, add the fresh green beans to the skillet. Place a lid over the skillet and continue to cook until the green beans are a gorgeous green color.

Add the chicken broth, salt and black pepper to the pan. Turn the heat down too low, cover the green beans with a lid, leaving the lid cracked on the pan to allow the steam to escape. Cook for 20 – 30 minutes or until the chicken broth evaporates and the beans are fairly soft. You can add more chicken broth to the pan while the green beans cook if necessary to cook them longer if need be. But don’t be afraid to let the broth cook away so the onions and peppers caramelize. After the broth has evaporated, take the lid off the pan and let the onions and peppers cook, turning them with a spatula until they caramelize slightly.Fresh Green Bean Side Dish Recipe has tons of flavor and makes a delicious fresh green bean side dish anytime of the year. I hope it becomes as much a favorite in your house as it is in mine, ENJOY!
